Nerve conduction study specialist

A nerve conduction study is a non-invasive diagnostic test performed to check the functionality of the nerves. The study reveals how fast the electric impulses are traveling through various nerves. In case of damage, the nerve conduction study reveals the damaged nerves as well. At Indiana Neurology and Pain Center, our nerve conduction study specialists carefully perform nerve conduction tests usually combined with electromyography (EMG). schedule your appointment today!

Nerve conduction study Q & A

A nerve conduction study diagnoses the damaged nerves in the body. It looks for the nerve functions and at what pace the electrical impulses are traveling through the nerves.

Following are the conditions in which you may be recommended for nerve conduction study:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Herniated disc
  • Neuropathy
  • Sciatic nerve problems
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

The suspected nerves are targeted during the nerve conduction study. The procedure includes attaching two electrodes on the skin and over the suspected nerve(s). While one electrode is required to stimulate the nerve, the other one records the result. Depending on how fast the electrical impulses are transmitted between the electrodes, the diagnosis report is prepared by our nerve conduction study specialists.

EMG stands for electromyography which is a diagnostic test that confirms/rules out a muscle or nerve dysfunction. The EMG procedure includes placing needle electrodes directly into the muscles to assess the functioning of muscles and motor neurons. Some patients may experience pain due to needle insertion. However, it goes away once the needle is removed. After the procedure is done, a detailed diagnostic report is provided to proceed with the further pain management procedure.
